Charilaos Odysseas Ioannidis MD, DMD, PhD

Charilaos Odysseas Ioannidis was born on 1 January 1955 in Athens, Greece, to Alexandros Ioannidis, physician – endocrinologist and Eirini Bakoyanni, solicitor.

He attended:

  • Elementary school (Maraslios Pedagogiki Academia), Athens
  • Junior high school and high school (Dörpfeld Gymnasium-Deutsche Schule Athen), Athens
  • Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Athens acquiring an MD and a DMD degree.

He trained:

  • In General Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Universities of Leiden (Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, the Netherlands)
  • Nijmegen (Radboud University –former Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, the Netherlands)
  • He served in the Greek Navy as a recruit with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. During that period he held the position of senior registrar at the department of Ear Nose and Throat (ORL), Athens Naval Hospital
  • He successfully defended his PhD Thesis on the Intraarticular Cartilage Transplantation in 1987 and was appointed Universitair Docent (Assistant Professor) at the Radboud University in Nijmegen.
  • In General Surgery (specialized in Head and Neck Surgery) and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (specialized in Reconstructive Microsurgery) at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL Belgium) and the University College London (UCL-Great Britain).

He was appointed:

  • Assoc. Professor of Surgery (Head and Neck Surgery) at the University of Leuven (1991)
  • Consultant at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Middlesex Hospital
    (University College London Hospitals NHS Trust-1996)
  • Honorary Consultant at the Whittington Hospital (1996) (London, Great Britain) (General
    Medical Council Specialist Reg. No. 4042774).
  • Since 2002 he has been practicing Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a Consultant P/R
    Surgeon in Athens, Greece
  • Head and neck surgery

In 1981 he commenced an experimental research on intra articular cartilage  transplants in guinea pigs (PhD Thesis), which was completed in 1986. His PhD Thesis was successfully  defended in June 1987.

He has participated in numerous national and international congresses and conferences were he has  presented more than one hundred presentations.
He has published over seventy seven scientific papers in peer reviewed national and international  journals (see list of publications).

He has published six scientific books:

  • Replacement of the interarticular disc of the craniomandibular joint: An experimental and  clinical study( Eurosound Drukkerij, Nijmegen The Netherlands, 209 pages, 1987)

He has also published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines on Plastic Surgery, Skin  Cancer, Breast Pathology, Facial Traumatology etc.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cranio-Max. Fac. Surgery (since 1989 – has  also served as section Editor for the same Journal). He has also served as reviewer for various other international scientific (mainly surgical) journals.

He is, or has been, a member of several medical and surgical societies and associations in  Europe, North America, Australia etc. He is also a member of nonmedical societies and  associations (Athens Club, Corfu Reading Society etc.)

As a staff member of the aforementioned Universities, he has lectured Medical and Dental  students, residents and attending physicians /surgeons (general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons,  ENT-surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, etc.) on various topics (surgical oncology of the head and  neck, surgical pathology of the breast, traumatology, reconstructive surgery etc.) in English, Dutch/Flemish.

He served as instructor of residents in basic surgical techniques (Nijmegen, the  Netherlands) as well as instructor of registrars/specialist registrars in microsurgery (London, Great Britain).
